Ages 16+ | July 14, 21, 28, 4 | 5:30pm-8:30pm | $195 This introductory course is designed for both complete beginners and those with some prior experience. It provides a foundational understanding of charcoal drawing and is strongly recommended for anyone who has not previously worked in this medium. Drawing Fundamentals emphasizes building control and confidence with charcoal, enabling students to progress into more advanced study. This course lays the groundwork for practice in observational drawing. What to Expect Each of the four sessions includes live demonstrations followed by structured practice. The format is hands-on and exercise-based, with no required take-home assignments. However, instructors are available to suggest additional individualized work upon request. Topics covered include: - Introduction to drawing materials and how to use them effectively - Poster and pencil control techniques - Exercises designed to build skill and eliminate common drawing habits - Applying drawing fundamentals to basic three-dimensional forms - Introduction to the sight-size method of drawing - Still life drawing to assess progress and retention Materials List Students are expected to bring their own supplies. Becoming familiar with purchasing materials is considered an important step in building long-term artistic independence. A limited supply of backup materials will be available for purchase in the event of forgotten or depleted items. Extra drawing paper will be on hand if needed. Required Materials: - 18x24 SMOOTH Newsprint (pad or loose sheets) - 12x Conte à Paris 1710B Pierre Noire B pencils (I buy from Blick.com) - Razor blades (basic hardware store blades, available in bulk) - Kneaded erasers (any brand; bring at least two) Recommended (Optional): Portfolio bag and secure pencil case for carrying newsprint and materials
